A 60% to 70% average retail gross-margin target can be modeled only when Singapore GST, first-order support, landed cost, realized price, foreign exchange, sell-through, stock risk and store expenses use the same basis. This guide shows the calculation and evidence required before investment.

Direct Answer: Use 60% to 70% as a Planning Range, Not a Promise

Under suitable local pricing and normal sell-through, a ZULIZ partner may plan toward an average retail gross-margin target of approximately 60% to 70%. This is a commercial planning range, not a Singapore industry average, a net-profit forecast or a guaranteed return.

The useful question is not whether a spreadsheet can display 60%, 65% or 70%. It is whether that margin survives Singapore GST treatment, complete landed cost, the actual SKU and size mix, discounts, returns, foreign-exchange movement, slow stock and the operating costs of the chosen channel.

This guide is for Singapore retailers, shop-in-shop operators, e-commerce businesses and distributors evaluating a wide-fit comfort-footwear offer for middle-aged and older customers. It keeps one search intent: how to build and test the store-margin model before committing more capital.

Keep Five Commercial Numbers Separate

Number What it means What it must not be confused with
Quoted merchandise price The price basis in the supplier quotation for the selected SKU and order conditions. It is not the cost of placing a sellable pair in Singapore inventory.
Effective average merchandise cost Paid merchandise allocated across eligible purchased and support pairs actually received and sellable. It is not a universal wholesale price and excludes destination import costs.
Landed cost The cost required to place a sellable pair into the Singapore operator's inventory. It does not include every store operating expense.
Retail gross margin Net retained product sales minus the matching cost of goods sold, divided by net retained product sales. It is not markup and it is not net profit.
Net operating result The result after relevant selling costs, fixed costs, financing, tax and other expenses. It cannot be inferred from a headline product-margin percentage.

How the Current Partner Framework Changes Starting Cash Risk

ZULIZ's current low-barrier cooperation policy changes the cost structure in specific ways. It does not remove the need for a credible local operating budget.

  • No brand usage fee: this removes a brand-side fee line under the current policy.
  • US$50,000 brand security deposit waived: this reduces cash tied up before inventory begins to sell.
  • Samples or a small mixed-SKU test: a prospective partner can test fit, size demand, product explanation and price acceptance before a wider commitment.
  • Qualifying first commercial order support: under an agreed written plan, eligible purchased pairs may be matched with an equal number of eligible support pairs at no additional merchandise charge.
  • Different eligible support SKUs: headquarters normally recommends variety so the opening assortment can test more needs, sizes, climates and selling occasions. The final mix remains subject to written agreement and local evidence.

A larger but still sellable first commercial order may make fuller use of the one-time opening support when the partner already has traffic, adequate cash flow and a defined sales plan. This support is not automatically available for every SKU, every order or any future reorder. More units are not automatically better; the support creates value only when the SKU and size mix can sell.

Convert First-Order Support Into a Defensible Merchandise Cost

Let P be eligible purchased pairs actually received and sellable, S be eligible support pairs actually received and sellable, and M be the paid merchandise amount attributable to those eligible pairs.

For selected styles, effective average merchandise cost can start below US$10 per pair after applicable first-order support. That statement applies only to selected eligible styles under the applicable written plan. It is not a universal wholesale price and it is not Singapore landed cost.

Support pairs supplied at no additional merchandise charge are not automatically zero-value customs goods. Singapore Customs requires free-of-charge items to be declared and says that samples or free-of-charge items must not be assigned a merely nominal value. Ordinary footwear is generally non-dutiable in Singapore, but the shipment may still require a customs value and incur import GST, freight, clearance and handling. Confirm the HS code, customs value, permit and GST treatment with the importer of record or declaring agent before shipment.

When support pairs use different SKUs, calculate both a shipment-pool average and a SKU-level cost allocation. The pooled average shows the cash cost of the supported inventory pool. The SKU view prevents a low average from hiding an expensive, slow-moving or freight-intensive model.

Build Singapore Landed Cost Before Setting the Ticket Price

A ZULIZ quotation can provide a merchandise-cost starting point for the Singapore model, but it cannot establish local competitiveness on its own. The decision still has to be made from complete landed cost, realized local pricing and sell-through. Freight, customs treatment, shipment size, packaging, storage and local delivery can materially change the cost per sellable pair.

Do not use an after-sales credit from a previously sold cohort to make a new inbound shipment appear cheaper. Attribute that credit to the relevant claim or sales cohort. Keep recoverable tax separate from permanent cost when the operator satisfies the applicable rules and has the required records.

Apply Singapore GST on a Consistent Basis

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore states that the current GST rate is 9%. A margin model must identify whether every selling price and cost is GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive.

For a GST-registered operator making a standard-rated sale:

If the customer pays S$100 including GST, GST-exclusive sales are approximately S$91.74. A target gross margin of 65% would require matching landed cost of goods sold of no more than approximately S$32.11 on that sale. Using S$100 as both the GST-inclusive customer price and the net-sales denominator would overstate the margin.

Input-tax recovery is separate. IRAS states that input tax may be claimed only when all applicable conditions are satisfied and in the correct accounting period. Review the official conditions for claiming input tax and obtain qualified local advice for the operator's facts.

Understand What 60%, 65% and 70% Require

The target range becomes useful only when expressed on the same GST-exclusive net-sales and matching landed-cost basis.

Target gross margin GST-exclusive net sales Maximum matching landed cost Equivalent markup on cost
60% S$100 S$40 150%
65% S$100 S$35 185.7%
70% S$100 S$30 233.3%

Retail gross margin = (GST-exclusive net retained product sales − matching landed cost of goods sold) ÷ GST-exclusive net retained product sales.

A 60% margin is not a 60% markup. A 60% margin requires a selling price equal to 2.5 times cost before considering how GST, discounts and refunds affect the net-sales denominator.

Foreign Exchange Can Change the Spread, Not Create Demand

A favorable exchange-rate relationship may improve the spread between local retail revenue and imported product cost. A currency with a higher face value does not automatically produce more profit, and exchange rates can move in either direction between quotation, payment, import and sale.

Record the quotation currency, payment dates, conversion rates, bank charges and any hedging or settlement costs. Then test the margin under a base exchange rate and an adverse movement. Even a favorable rate cannot rescue an assortment that requires heavy markdowns or does not sell. Product-market fit and sell-through remain the governing variables.

Sell-Through Protects the Margin More Than a Headline Percentage

Footwear inventory is a matrix of SKU, color and size. A 65% planned margin can fall quickly when core sizes sell out, slow sizes require markdowns or the opening range is too broad.

For example, if matching landed cost is S$35 and GST-exclusive net selling price is S$100, gross margin is 65%. If the realized net selling price falls to S$80 while cost remains S$35, gross margin falls to 56.25%. The product did not become more expensive; the realized price changed.

The first-order plan should therefore state the purchased and support SKUs, size curve, opening channel, target ticket price, markdown rules, review date and reorder trigger. Headquarters normally recommends different eligible support SKUs to broaden learning, but the final written mix should reflect local customer evidence rather than variety for its own sake.

Slow Stock Requires Diagnosis Before Transfer

Review slow stock by SKU, size, color, receipt cohort, channel and realized selling price. Check whether the problem comes from fit, size coverage, product explanation, display, price, season or customer need. Use that evidence to adjust the next order and product mix.

If a relevant regional warehouse has suitable inventory and logistics conditions permit, stock coordination or transfer may be discussed. For a Singapore partner, local coordination may be more practical when suitable Singapore inventory is available. This is not an automatic stock-buyback, exchange or unrestricted transfer promise. Availability, ownership, eligibility, freight, GST, timing, territory and settlement must be confirmed in writing.

Gross Margin Still Has to Fund the Store

Product gross margin creates merchandise headroom. It does not prove that the store is profitable.

Rent, payroll, marketing, payment fees, fulfilment, financing, depreciation, tax and owner remuneration can turn an attractive product margin into a weak operating result. Model a full-price case, a realistic blended-price case and a downside case before approving the location or inventory depth.

After-Sales Must Be Included in the Operating Model

For a qualifying sole separation or sole break reported within the applicable one-year period stated in the written policy, retain proof of purchase or the order record, the relevant SKU details, clear photographs and video. After policy review and verification, the approved corresponding amount is credited directly against the cooperation partner's goods payment.

Global after-sales is coordinated through the applicable local store, agent, distributor or cooperation channel. Submission alone does not create automatic approval, a cash refund or an unconditional replacement. Customer fit or size exchanges remain a separate local policy and cost.

An approved after-sales credit should be attributed to the relevant claim or sales cohort. Do not use it to reduce the landed cost of an unrelated new shipment. This keeps the product-margin model and claim economics auditable.

Margin Does Not Automatically Create Exclusive Rights

A strong margin model, samples, a first order or an open territory does not automatically create country, city or channel exclusivity. Any right depends on due diligence, the proposed products and channels, operating and service capability, inventory responsibility, market-development commitments and measurable performance.

Scope, term, review points, renewal conditions and termination rights must be defined in a signed agreement. The framework should protect a capable partner's investment without allowing an inactive territory to remain blocked.

Use Brand Scale as Context, Not as a Sales Forecast

ZULIZ reports that global cumulative sales have exceeded 100,000,000 pairs. This is company-reported cumulative scale information. It is not annual sales, Singapore sales, proof that a particular SKU will sell or a guarantee of margin, profit or return.

A Singapore partner still has to prove the local customer, price, SKU and size mix, channel and repeat-order logic. Scale can support confidence in operating history; only local evidence can support the next inventory decision.

What the Written Singapore Margin Proposal Should Contain

  1. The exact purchased and support SKUs, sizes, quantities, eligibility, availability and shipment timing.
  2. The no-brand-fee and waived US$50,000 brand-security-deposit terms that apply to the proposed cooperation.
  3. The merchandise quotation, trade term, payment milestones and effective merchandise-cost calculation.
  4. Customs values for purchased and support pairs, freight, insurance, GST, clearance and local delivery assumptions.
  5. GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive selling prices for full-price, blended-price and downside scenarios.
  6. The 60% to 70% gross-margin scenarios using matching landed cost and realized selling price.
  7. The exchange-rate assumption and an adverse-currency scenario.
  8. The opening SKU and size curve, markdown rules, reorder triggers and slow-stock review process.
  9. Any regional stock-coordination option, including availability, ownership, logistics cost and written approval.
  10. The one-year sole-separation or sole-break evidence, review and goods-payment-credit process.
  11. The local customer-service, returns, fitting and after-sales responsibilities.
  12. Any requested channel or territory right, including performance, review and termination conditions.

Request a Singapore Store-Margin Review

Send the company name, current retail category or channel, proposed location, approximate store size, target customer, preferred opening models, expected retail-price range and target launch month. Ask for a dated SKU quotation, written first-order support plan, GST and landed-cost worksheet, proposed size curve and after-sales policy.

For the broader application and territory process, read the ZULIZ Singapore distributor guide. To start a commercial review, visit the ZULIZ partnership page or email Ray.pang@zuliz.com.

FAQ

What gross-margin target should a Singapore ZULIZ store use in its opening model?

Under suitable local pricing and normal sell-through, a partner may plan toward an average retail gross-margin target of approximately 60% to 70%. This is a planning range, not a Singapore industry average, net profit, forecast or guarantee. The final model must use GST-exclusive net retained sales and the matching landed cost of the pairs sold.

Which brand-side entry costs are removed from the Singapore store-margin plan?

Under the current low-barrier cooperation policy, there is no brand usage fee and the US$50,000 brand security deposit is waived. Partners must still budget for merchandise, freight, insurance, duties, GST, clearance, local delivery, store or channel setup, staff, marketing, returns and working capital. Applicable terms require written confirmation.

How should a Singapore partner size its test order before modeling gross margin?

There is no responsible universal MOQ for every SKU, market and shipment. A prospective partner may request samples or discuss a small mixed-SKU test. A larger but still sellable first commercial order may make fuller use of one-time opening support when existing traffic, cash flow and the sales plan justify it. Exact quantities must be agreed in writing.

How should qualifying first-order support and different SKUs enter the Singapore margin model?

Under an agreed written plan, eligible purchased pairs in a qualifying first commercial order may be matched with an equal number of eligible support pairs at no additional merchandise charge. Headquarters normally recommends different eligible support SKUs so the Singapore partner can test more needs, sizes and selling occasions. Eligibility, purchased and support items, sizes, quantities, availability, timing and shipment treatment must be confirmed in writing; the support is not automatically available for every SKU, order or reorder.

Does the below-US$10 starting point equal a Singapore store's landed cost?

No. For selected styles, effective average merchandise cost can start below US$10 per pair after applicable first-order support. It is not a universal wholesale price or landed cost. Support pairs may require a customs value, and freight, insurance, import GST, clearance, handling, inspection, compliance and local delivery remain additional; customs duty applies only if required for the classified item.

How should Singapore's 9% GST enter this footwear gross-margin calculation?

State whether every price and cost is GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive. For a GST-registered operator making a standard-rated sale, Singapore's current GST rate is 9%; therefore, S$100 of GST-inclusive sales equals approximately S$91.74 of GST-exclusive sales. Input tax may be claimed only when all applicable IRAS conditions are met and in the accounting period corresponding to the invoice or import permit. Obtain qualified advice for the actual business.

Can Singapore's exchange-rate position by itself create footwear profit?

No. A favorable currency relationship may improve the spread between Singapore retail revenue and imported merchandise cost, but exchange rates can move between quotation, payment, import and sale. Record the currency basis and test an adverse movement. Realized price, complete landed cost and sell-through determine the result.

What should the Singapore margin plan assume for slow footwear SKUs and sizes?

Review slow stock by SKU, size, color, receipt cohort, channel and realized selling price, then adjust the next order, product mix or selling approach. If suitable Singapore or other regional inventory is available and logistics conditions permit, stock coordination or transfer may be discussed. It is not an automatic buyback or exchange; availability, ownership, freight, GST, timing, territory and approval require written confirmation.

How should one-year sole-separation or sole-break claims enter the Singapore model?

For a qualifying case reported within the applicable one-year period stated in the written policy, retain proof of purchase or the order record, SKU details, clear photographs and video. After policy review and verification, the approved corresponding amount is credited directly against the cooperation partner's goods payment. Global after-sales is coordinated through the applicable local store, agent, distributor or cooperation channel; submission alone does not create automatic approval.

Can a strong Singapore gross-margin model create automatic exclusive rights?

No. Samples, a first order, a margin model or an open territory does not automatically create country, city or channel exclusivity. Any right depends on due diligence, operating and service capability, products, channels, market-development commitments and measurable performance. Scope, term, review, renewal and termination conditions must be defined in a signed agreement.

How should Singapore investors use ZULIZ's reported cumulative-sales figure?

ZULIZ reports that global cumulative sales have exceeded 100,000,000 pairs. This is company-reported cumulative scale information, not annual sales, Singapore sales, proof that a particular SKU will sell or a guarantee of margin, profit or return. Local product fit, pricing and sell-through still require testing.
